About us

Black Hill Camping occupies a field and and a small orchard on a secluded hill farm within the South Shropshire Hills at Obley near Clun, Knighton and Leintwardine.

Our ethos is to provide a peaceful and enjoyable environment for guests seeking to experience the unique rural qualities of the Shropshire Hills – including walking, cycling and biking.

We are not a busy site – we choose to limit the number of campers as this helps ensure a quiet and peaceful experience for our guests as well as our neighbours. A toilet and shower block are situated adjacent to the camping field/orchard and the barbecue station may be pre-booked on a fair-share basis. Vehicles are not permitted within the camping field but a parking area is provided nearby.

Our bell tents are furnished with a comfy double bed as well as two futon beds, sufficient to sleep two adults and two children with ease. Seating, tables and plenty of cushions add practicality and luxury. We do not provide electrical hook-ups – lighting is from rechargeable lanterns.

Our non-electric grass pitch for a touring tent and up to four occupants is approximately 5m x 5m.

We are situated within a dark sky area – so our starry skies are amazing to behold on a cloudless night. Shooting stars may be observed either from the camping field or from Fiddler’s Elbow view point near the top of Black Hill.

Red Kite, Buzzard, Sparrow Hawk and a myriad of other wild birds may be observed from the camping field most days. Owls and bats by night. Wild deer roam the woodland and fields locally. For an extra-special treat, rare Pine Marten may sometimes be spotted at certain locations nearby.

We have ducks, geese and chickens many of which are rare breeds, such as Brecon Buff Geese and Buff Orpington Ducks. Our own fresh duck and chicken eggs are available most days. Please remember to close all gates behind you and please do not climb on or over fences.

Our site office stocks a few essential groceries – enough for an impromptu barbecue at least. Convenience stores in both Clun and Knighton stock a range of groceries and Bucknell, Leintwardine and Knighton all have excellent butchers. Knighton has a fine bakery. The best fish and chips to be found anywhere are equally good in both Knighton and Leintwardine. For fine dining, a trip to Ludlow is well worthwhile or, virtually on our doorstep, the Baron at Bucknell. A special mention to Caractacus Gift Shop in Clun where you’re bound to find a few treasures to take home or to gift to friends and family.
